Why does my baby need Tummy Time?
Tummy time is an important factor in the motor development of infants. Starting from birth it is recommended to incorporate tummy time in the daily routine. Tummy time is an important factor in mastering basic milestones such as head lifting, turning over, sitting up and crawling. Tummy time can also prevent the back of your baby’s head from becoming flat (positional plagiocephaly).
What if my baby does not like Tummy Time?
Some babies may not like the tummy time position at first. Place yourself or a toy in reach for her to play with. Eventually your baby will enjoy tummy time and begin to enjoy play in this position.
How Much Tummy Time Should An Infant Have?
Starting at birth it is recommended to play and interact with the baby while they are awake and on the tummy 2 to 3 times each day for a short period of time (3-5 minutes). It is recommended to gradually increase tummy time in the first 3-4 months, working up to a total of an hour per day that is divided in shorter increments. A great time to do this is following a diaper change or when the baby wakes up from a nap.
As babies grow older and stronger they will need more time on their tummies to build their own strength.
Tummy time should always be supervised during the day, never leave your baby unattended during tummy time. If your baby falls asleep while on their tummy, flip them over to their back to sleep.
